Listening to Parents and Teachers

As a parent of 5 children enrolled in Albemarle County Public Schools, I know first hand the importance of parental involvement in ensuring that our students get the excellent education that they deserve.  This is backed up by extensive research, which shows that family engagement leads to higher grades and test scores, improved attendance, and better student behavior. Similarly, we need to listen to and value the input of our wonderful ACPS teachers, who know how to effectively educate our students.

Unfortunately, not all parents and teachers feel like their voices are being heard or valued. As a school board candidate, I am committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive educational environment.  We must listen to both parents and teachers, as they are essential stakeholders in the success of our schools and our students.

To achieve more effective communication among parents, teachers, and district leadership, including the School Board, I propose the establishment of an ombudsperson position for Albemarle County Public Schools. This ombudsperson will offer a transparent, accessible, and confidential channel for parents and teachers to express their concerns and contribute to the improvement of our public schools. In addition, an ombudsperson can serve as a neutral mediator, helping informally resolve disputes or grievances that arise.

Specifically, an ombudsperson can help achieve the following:

  • Listening to Parents

Parents’ insights are invaluable in shaping school policies and practices. However, navigating the education system can sometimes be overwhelming for parents. By appointing an ombudsperson, we will create a designated liaison between parents and the School Board. This office will actively listen to parents' concerns, address their questions, and ensure that their voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process.

  • Empowering Teachers

Our teachers are the backbone of our educational system, and their expertise is fundamental to fostering a thriving learning environment. An ombudsperson can provide teachers with a confidential and non-adversarial platform to discuss their ideas, challenges, and suggestions for improvement. This open communication channel will empower teachers to be actively involved in shaping curriculum, professional development opportunities, and school policies that reflect their expertise and experience.

  • Mediating Conflicts

Disagreements or conflicts occasionally can arise between various stakeholders within the educational community. An ombudsperson can serve as a neutral mediator, helping to resolve disputes amicably and efficiently. This proactive approach can prevent misunderstandings from escalating and create a more harmonious and collaborative educational environment.

  • Enhancing Transparency

An ombudsperson provides an additional layer of transparency in our educational system. By documenting and tracking concerns, suggestions, and resolutions, the ombudsperson ensures that the School Board remains accountable to the needs and concerns of the community. This fosters a culture of trust and openness between the school board and the broader community.

  • Improving Policy-Making

Listening to parents and teachers through an ombudsperson can lead to more informed and effective policy-making. By gathering diverse perspectives and experiences, the School Board can make decisions that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.

In conclusion, an ombudsperson for Albemarle County Public Schools will help create a more inclusive, transparent, and collaborative educational system.  Let's work together to strengthen our schools, empower our teachers, and ensure that every student receives the excellent education they deserve.
